Resurfacing of Beach Road in Strand

10 October 2023

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate hereby advises residents, road users and the public in the Strand area of roadworks along Beach Road between Thompson Street and Sarel Cilliers Street in Strand. The roadworks are planned to take place from today, 10 October 2023, until Friday, 8 December 2023, weather permitting and provided there are no unforeseen delays. Work is scheduled for Mondays until Saturdays from 09:00 till 15:30. No work is scheduled during the night and Sundays.

The resurfacing of this section of Beach Road forms part of the City's road maintenance programme.

The scope of the work comprises the surfacing of the entire westbound and eastbound carriageway, including the parking embayments of Beach Road between Thompson Street and Sarel Cilliers Street intersection.

This includes the milling and removal of the existing bituminous surfacing layer and relaying it with asphalt surfacing. The resurfacing of ramps at raised pedestrian crossings, parking embayments and replacing all damaged manholes, catchpits, frames and chambers as well as raising others to flush with the road surface.

All road markings removed during the process will be reinstated and be retro-reflective. Road users are asked to factor in longer travel times and to consider alternative routes. There will be a Stop/Go traffic system where lanes will be closed due to the resurfacing.

'The maintenance of Beach Road will prolong the longevity of this road and will ensure improved road safety conditions as well as quality driving conditions, which decreases motorists' costs. We further ask that road users be cautious while this work is under way; lower your speed, pay attention to road signs, be vigilant in and around the roadworks area and look out for uneven road surfaces,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
